Fondazione Boschi Di Stefano

FONDAZIONE
BOSCHI DI STEFANO
LIBRARY

Camesasca Library

Fondazione Boschi Di Stefano houses the library collection of over 2,300 volumes belonging to the art historian Ettore Camesasca (1922-1995), generously donated by his heir.

A multifaceted personality, Camesasca is reknown for curating the “Classics of Art” series for Rizzoli, organizing both international and national exhibitions, and collaborating with P.M. Bardi on the setup of the Museum of Art in São Paulo, Brazil.

The remarkable value of this library heritage lies not only in the vastness and variety of its subjects—ranging from art history to literature and even the history of language—but also in the unique nature of the material found within the volumes. As it was the personal working library of the scholar, it contains direct physical interventions by the critic, who made annotations, corrections, and expressed doubts regarding attributions or the placement of works on the pages. He also inserted correspondence letters with prominent critics and scholars such as Roberto Longhi and Federico Zeri.

M. P. Garberi e L. Bortolon
collection

The Foundation also preserves two library collections directly connected to its archival heritage, which belonged to Mercedes Precerutti Garberi (1927-2007), former Director of Milan’s Civic Art Collections, and Liana Bortolon (1923-2020), a journalist and art critic.

Although these are smaller collections, their significance lies precisely in their connection with preparatory materials for exhibitions and articles preserved in their personal archives. The comparison of these documents offers scholars and interested individuals a comprehensive understanding of these two researchers and their multifaceted personalities.

Recent acquisitions

Over the years, the Foundation has also undertaken the acquisition of additional volumes with the aim of promoting knowledge of the 20th-century art scene and facilitating an appreciation of the artworks displayed in Casa Museo’s collection.

Consequently, titles dedicated to artists exhibited in the museum, to the practice of collecting, and to the Milanese museum landscape are prevalent. This core is further supplemented by a selection of publications conceived and produced by the Foundation concerning the artworks, furnishings, and lives of Antonio Boschi and Marieda Di Stefano.
